About Conversation Among The Ruins

Conversation Among The Ruins was set up after we realised that Canterbury and its Universites were without a clear independent media source. There are a number of local newspapers, university magazines and business run websites available for the consumption of the people of Canterbury and its surrounding area, but an organisation, company or political party with its own individual agenda and objective, runs each of these. This situation can arguably lead to a clouding of the content of the media available, and provide a somewhat lopsided view of issues, particularly those relating to local politics.

It is therefore the aim of the creators of Conversation Among The Ruins to provide a forum for writers, whether Canterbury-based or otherwise, to express their opinions freely and openly, without the pressure of bias-related censorship. We hope to offer an area for intelligent debate and expression, incorporating university, local and world issues, philosophy, history, the arts, sport, travel, and creative writing. Additionally, we also aim to offer an area in which those who cannot seek representation within the other available forms of the media can find a platform, and allow individuals the right to reply to criticisms levied at them.

Conversation Among The Ruins is an entirely non-profit website run by students of the University of Kent, and relies wholly on the work provided by contributors. The vast majority of our writers are students at the University of Kent, and those who are not are closely associated with someone at the university. It of course goes without saying that the articles published on the website are the opinions of the writers themselves, and do not represent the politics or beliefs of the editors. If you are offended by any of the content, or feel that an issue has suffered severe misrepresentation, do not hesitate to contact us with your views – provided of course that they are not heavily abusive or downright offensive. The editors would like to point out most sincerely that if you do feel that a subject or an institution has experienced a grave injustice at the hands of a contributor, that the website will most happily publish a response.

The editors of Conversation Among The Ruins have gone to great pains to make sure that all contributions submitted are neither plagiarised nor libellous. If you are aware that particular content on the website does not fulfil this criteria, then please contact us immediately. In addition to this, if you wish to reproduce content from the website, please contact us. It is up to the contributors individually what happens to their articles.
